Press Release: NEA’s Read Across America

NEA’s Read Across America, Reading Rockets lift off with the Gateway to 21st Century Skills!

Reading Rockets and the Gateway to 21st Century Skills have come together in support of NEA’s Read Across America. Both non-profit organizations have announced a year round collaboration project to make access to Reading Rockets material easily discoverable using the Gateway’s state of the art cataloging and search technologies.

The Read Across America reading celebration takes place each year on or near March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Now in its twelfth year, it focuses on motivating children to read, in addition to help master basic skills. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing together kids and books.

NEA's Read Across America also provides educators, parents, caregivers, and children the resources and activities they need to keep reading on the calendar 365 days a year. To that end, Reading Rockets and the Gateway to 21st Century Skills have come together to bring easy year round access to Reading Rockets recommended materials. Reading Rockets was created for teachers, parents, grandparents, caregivers, and anyone else who touches children’s lives. The Gateway to 21st Century Skills is sponsored by NEA and features free access to more than 50,000 learning resource from over 700 contributing members.

The result will be that a simple search on the Gateway using the keywords “RAA” or “Reading Rockets” will provide users with information and hyperlinks to Reading Rockets recommended materials.

“We’ve already published a great collection of resources that you can access through the Gateway, with more being added every month” said Tina Chovanec of Reading Rockets. “This will make it easy for those who want to extend Read Across America activities all year long and find new ways to engage young kids with books every day. Gateway’s vast audience will bring much wider visibility to our reading resources, and link visitors to the Reading Rockets website where they can browse all our print and multimedia content. Strong reading and writing are core skills for the 21st Century learner. We are dedicated to the mission of helping all children learn to read, and are very pleased to be in partnership with Read Across America through NEA’s Gateway.”
