GEM Educator Tour '08-'09

Given the number of dedicated daily visitors to GEM, there's no doubt that this 21st Century teaching tool is the single most popular Net-based resource for finding lesson plans and related pre-K - 16 classroom resources.

But NEA has even bigger plans for GEM. NEA believes that GEM can become the educators' "google"...

..."did you "GEM" that lesson plan?" ...

... and a viable social network for educators.

As we prepare to build out new GEM Web site features and plan for next year's budget, I'd like to share last year's budget to give everyone an update on how NEA/GEM partnership monies are used.

A more indepth accounting and a presentation on future plans to expand GEM will be presented at an upcoming meeting to discuss renewal of partnership.

NJEA Adds "Back to school tips about riding the bus" to GEM

NJEA added their recently published Web-based resource for parents titled "Back to school tips about riding the bus" to the Gateway to 21st Centry Materials (GEM).

Additionally, over the coming weeks, GEM staff will work with NJEA to catalog other valuable teacher and parent publications and resources. This opportunity is available to all "branded" affiliates. NJEA is the first branded affiliate to leverage this benefit.

NEA and its affiliates produce quality content for distribution via Web sites. GEM is working to ensure that NEA and affiliate free/open content makes it to the top of GEM search results whenever GEM users search for content. This ensures that members and non members alike will experience some of the value that association membership affords.

[NOTE: GEM simply serves up metadata about resources. It points the user of GEM to the actual Web site containing the resource described by GEM. In other words, NJEA has cataloged their “Back to School Tips” with GEM. Educators who search GEM will view the metadata describing the resource and will be directed to NJEA's site if they wish to access the brochure.]

For a list of other NJEA soon-to-be-cataloged resources, visit the "For Parents" section of NJEA's Web site.

United pilots launch Web site to oust CEO

By Jamie Pietras
Under a social media firestorm, United Airlines is experiencing some not-so-friendly skies

There was a time, not many eons ago, when a group of dissatisfied airline pilots wishing to send their management team a potent, headline-grabbing message, might have rounded up their union colleagues and organized a good old-fashioned strike.

Sites Mimicking Social Networks
Set Up for Staff Development

Education Week
By Stephen Sawchuk

As support and professional-development opportunities for teachers begin to move from conference rooms to chat rooms, a burgeoning number of states and districts are drawing on features from course-management software and popular social-networking sites to establish online networks connecting teachers to peers who may live dozens or even hundreds of miles away.

SDEA Leadership Embraces
Social Networking to Conduct Association Business

SDEA President Sandy Arseneault's interest in leveraging social networking with association business encouraged her to create her own network as "A place where our local presidents across the state stay connected to SDEA and network with each other."

Sandy is also a member of SDEA's over 20-member Virtual Membership Campaign Network, a private social network established to support leaders and staff throughout their Summer/Fall membership campaign. Sandy and other association leaders suggested that they all begin to apply a myriad of Web 2.0 tools to the work of membership organizing. Leaders and staff agree that understanding appropriate applications of these Web-based tools will prepare them for the near future when they'll expect to have to "go online" and recruiting new, younger members..
