Prof. Randy Pauch’s “Last” Speech

Almost all of us have childhood dreams: for example, being an astronaut, or making movies or video games for a living. Sadly, most people don't achieve theirs, and I think that's a shame. I had several specific childhood dreams, and I've actually achieved most of them. More importantly, I have found ways, in particular the creation (with Don Marinelli), of CMU's Entertainment Technology Center (etc.cmu.edu), of helping many young people actually *achieve* their childhood dreams. This talk will discuss how I achieved my childhood dreams (being in zero gravity, designing theme park rides for Disney, and a few others), and will contain realistic advice on how *you* can live your life so that you can make your childhood dreams come true, too.

  • Emotional Intelligence

There are many excellent books and articles on the latest brain research. I am by no means an expert. But I do love to read books on brain research, especially related to how it affects education and learning.

The thing you will find out if you start searching is there is a lot going on in this field. Way too much to keep up on for most of us.

    Recommended books:

    • Teaching With the Brain In Mind, Eric Jensen (anything by Jensen is excellent)
    • How the Brain Learns, David Sousa
    • The Owner's Manual For the Brain, Pierce J. Howard, Ph.D

Systems Thinking & The OD Map (Framework Module 5)

Systems thinking is a framework that is based on the belief that the component parts of a system will act differently when the systems relationships are removed and it is viewed in isolation. The only way to fully understand why a problem or element occurs and persists is to understand the part in relation to the whole.

Does your 8-hour day regularly morph into 12- or 16-?

If you answered Yes to any of these, your mind needs a vacation. Vacation!?!? You don’t need to request leave, book a flight, or reserve a room. Just sit squarely in your seat, take a deep breath, close your eyes and vacate…

    Action Learning

Action Learning (AL) Pioneered by Professor Reg Revans is a process of inquiry, beginning with the experience of not knowing 'what to do next', and finding that answers are not available through current expertise. When expertise fails to provide an answer, collaborative inquiry with fellow learners who are undergoing the same questioning experience is always available.

    Questions Shaping

"Appreciative inquiry is built upon recognition of the profound power of questions
in shaping our worlds; a power invoked by the phrase, “questions are fateful.” In
alignment with this realization, appreciative inquiry grows out of a deep-rooted
commitment to using the forging power of questions to transform individuals,
    organizations, and the world."
