Visioning

Peter Block and Peter Senge agree that having a vision is a critical part of success. (Block pg. 53) (Senge-pg. 28) The experience you had of saying your vision out loud allows you to clarify your vision and to publically commit to your vision. (Block pg.127)

When you are reflecting daily ask, "What have I done today to further my vision, help a local be more effective, or help an individual move toward their goals?" "How have I utilized my personal strengths to move toward my vision?"

Scenarios

West Haven(not the real name) is one example of how to use someone elses issues and bring about "ahas" for a local to examine itself. This can start the conversations.

These are real stories to learn from. You could find yourself in these situations and you are always looking for wedges to help your locals.

Possible Questions:

1. What does this local have going for it?
2. What are theygoing to need to develop?
3. What would you do with this local?
4. Where would you start?

Planning Process

Review of the planning process:

1. Examine current status and check resources that are already in place.

2. Develop goals, strategies and activities for the area that were identified by
the local. For example, if communications was selected what is the identifiable
goal and the plan back from that, what do they wish to see happen and how
will that be achieved and measured.
3. In the planning process be mindful of the following components that may need to be
addressed in the plan:

a. Make sure the goal is stated
b. Resources: time, people, $, and materials
c. Coordination: who is responsible for what
d. Calendar: when do we want to be done – work backwards
e. Communications: within and outside the Association
f. Implementation cycle- plan, do, check, refine
g. Budget: will you need it and how much
h. Evaluation: how do you know if your plan is working and how do you know what
others are thinking

4. How does the plan strengthen the local?

These postcards take you through an activity to help a group examine norms of working together and making a public commitment to each other. You can also use these questions to back into a vision.

Power Theory

Power that is concentrated diminishes exponentially.

Power that is distributed multiplies exponentially.

We want the power to be pushed down as far as possible, not residing with the President and the UD. Test this assumption your self.

**********HS – “Is it bad enough yet?”

1. “If you bring four people who are willing to consider working on addressing the problems in your school, I’ll help and buy dinner. You have to guarantee at least four and I’ll call the day before to get their names from you.”

2. After the dinner with the four: “Interested in proceeding? Then for me to be involved each one of you must to bring one person with you next time. Let’s brainstorm now the names of two people for each of you, put them in asking order and decide who will invite them to be part of this. You have to guarantee at least eight and I’ll call the day before to get their names from you. I buy dinner and participate if you get eight.”

3. After the dinner with the eight, “In order to continue each one of you needs to bring two people with you next time for the affinity diagram exercise we’ll be doing at the high school. Let’s brainstorm now the names of two people for each of you, and decide who will invite them to be part of this. You have to guarantee at least eight and I’ll call the day before to get their names from you. I buy dinner and participate if you get eight.”

4. After the exercise with the sixteen: “In order to continue each one of you needs to bring just one person with you next time for the planning exercise we’ll be doing at the Wildflowers Bed and Breakfast. Let’s brainstorm now the names of two people for each of you, put them in asking order and decide who will invite them to be part of this. If this is going to work you have to guarantee at least thirty-two and I’ll call the day before to get their names from you. I will buy dinner and participate if you get all thirty-two.”

The Answer to How is Yes

Read Pages 1 thru 12

This book gives us a framework for how we do our work. Acting on what matters should be our motto. If we ask, "How does what I am doing today, right now, strengthen the ability of the local to serve the interests of its members?' we know we're on the right track.
